Re: Informing IMRF of new members who will hold teacher aide positions in connection with Public Act 94-0834

August 11, 2006

On June 6, 2006, the governor signed House Bill 4463 into law as Public Act 94-0834. This new law revised the Illinois Retirement Systems Reciprocal Act to allow a former teacher aide who transferred to a position covered by the Teachers’ Retirement System (TRS) and who has less than 12 months of IMRF service credit to apply that service toward a reciprocal pension.

Tracking members eligible under P.A. 94-0834
In an effort to correctly classify a member as a former teacher aide eligible under P.A. 94-0834, IMRF has revised its enrollment form (Form 6.10). The revised form includes a question asking if the new member will perform teacher aide duties. We believe capturing this information now—at the beginning of a member’s career—will avoid problems later when the member applies for a pension.

We ask that you use the revised Form 6.10, “Notice of Enrollment,” when enrolling new members. The form can be printed from the forms area of the IMRF website, www.imrf.org. We are also having a supply of the revised form printed.
