Benefit Processing Time

It will take approximately eight weeks to process your benefit after the later of – the date IMRF receives all required information OR your benefit effective date. This includes retirements, death benefits, and disability benefits. For member contribution refunds and Voluntary Additional Contribution refunds, please allow approximately eight weeks processing time after IMRF receives the required information.

Public Act 104-0284 allows active members of the IMRF SLEP fund to transfer Article 3 police service to their IMRF pension fund from now until February 17, 2026.

Who may apply

If you are currently participating in the IMRF SLEP plan, you are eligible to transfer police pension service credit you have earned to your IMRF pension.

Amount of SLEP service you will receive

Service that the Article 3 contributions will pay for

After IMRF processes your application, you will receive a payment schedule. This payment schedule will show you the amount of IMRF SLEP service credit that the Article 3 contributions will pay for. (The cost for the IMRF SLEP service credit is the total amount you would have contributed to IMRF if you had participated in the IMRF SLEP Plan during this period, plus interest.)

Additional service you can purchase

Your payment schedule will also show you if there is additional service credit you can transfer if you pay an additional cost. The amount you will need to pay is the difference between the total amount of the Article 3 contributions and the total amount you would have contributed to IMRF if you had participated in the IMRF SLEP Plan during this period, plus interest. (The interest amount is compounded annually from the ending date of Article 3 participation to the date of payment from the Article 3 fund.)

Note: If you want to purchase additional service to transfer, you must elect to pay the additional required amount to transfer the full amount of Article 3 service as SLEP within 60 days after you receive notification of the total cost.

If IMRF does not receive your election in the 60-day period, you will only receive the amount of IMRF SLEP service credit that the Article 3 contributions will pay for.

Timeline to apply

The window to elect to transfer service is limited to six months. The window began August 15, 2025, and ends February 17, 2026.
Because the window to transfer out of the Article 3 fund is the same six-month period, you should apply as soon as possible to make sure there is enough time for both IMRF and your Article 3 fund to process your transfer.

Complete the Article 3 Police Pension Fund Transfer to IMRF form. Scan your completed form and send it to IMRF by attaching it to a secure message using Member Access. You can also fax your form to 630-706-4289 or mail the form to us.
