The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requires all government agencies, including IMRF, to make their information available to the public. Under FOIA, all IMRF records are open for inspection and copying (except records that are exempt under the law). If you submit a FOIA request to IMRF for information considered open, by law IMRF must give you this information.
FOIA Requests
Anyone can submit a FOIA request for IMRF public records. Your request must be in writing:
IMRF records consist of information about our members and employers as well as our investment portfolio. It also includes information on IMRF operations, such as administrative expenses and contracts.
IMRF member information subject to FOIA requests includes:
- Include your name, email address, and/or telephone number
- Describe the records you want
- You do not need to include the reason for your request, except to the extent necessary for IMRF to determine if:
- Your request is commercial
- We can waive the copy fee

You can submit in-person requests to IMRF’s Oak Brook or Springfield office between the hours of 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM on days IMRF is open for business.
How much will it cost you?
If we can make your copies in house, it will cost you 15 cents for every page over 50 pages. If we need to prepare copies out of house, your cost will not be more than what it costs IMRF to have the copies made. We may require you to pay the cost before we make the copies.
When will you get your records?
In most cases, you will get your records within five business days after we receive your request. If we need more time we will notify you within these first five days. If your FOIA request is for commercial purposes, we will tell you within twenty-one days how much time we need to complete your request.
