January EFTs delayed for alternate payees

January 24, 2023

The January benefit payment will be delayed for any alternate payee receiving payment by Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT). The benefit payment scheduled for January 26 will instead be deposited on February 1.

Who is impacted?

An alternate payee is a person who receives an IMRF benefit under a Qualified Illinois Domestic Relations Order (QILDRO). An alternate payee is usually a former spouse, but can also be a current spouse, child, or other dependent.

There will be no delay for alternate payees who receive their benefit payment by paper check. IMRF mailed these checks on January 24. They will be dated February 1.

There will also be no delay for IMRF benefit recipients who are not alternate payees. Those impacted by the delay represent about 0.6% of IMRF benefit recipients.

IMRF apologizes for the delay

An error related to IMRF’s technology systems caused the delay. IMRF takes its responsibility to deliver its benefits payments on time very seriously. We sincerely apologize for this error. We have taken steps to ensure that this does not happen again.
