House Bill 126 has been signed into law. This bill allows active members of an Article 3 police pension fund to transfer qualifying IMRF service to their Article 3 police pension fund in the next 6 months.
Who may apply
If you are currently participating in an Article 3 police pension fund, you are eligible to transfer qualifying IMRF service credit you have earned to your Article 3 fund.
Types of eligible service
Three types of service credit qualify:
- SLEP service
- Service earned while performing police duties at a municipality
- Service earned while performing full time law enforcement duties at a forest preserve district
Refunded service also qualifies if it meets the criteria above.
Timeline to apply
- The window to transfer service is limited to six months. The window began July 23, 2021, and ends January 23, 2022.
- Because the window to transfer into the Article 3 fund is the same six-month period, you should apply as soon as possible to make sure there is enough time for both IMRF and your Article 3 fund to process your transfer.
- If you have taken a refund of qualifying IMRF service, you can reinstate this service immediately. Keep in mind that IMRF will need additional time to generate your past service payment schedule and reinstate your service credit before it can be transferred.
Associated cost from the Article 3 fund
You will also need to pay an additional cost for this transfer to your Article 3 fund. IMRF has no further information about this amount.
