Generations Serving Generations Introduction

Working together to make a difference

Did you know that by volunteering, you not only help others and your community, but yourself as well?

IMRF and Generations Serving Generations

Generations Serving Generations is a statewide project in cooperation with the Illinois Department on Aging and the National Governors Association that promotes the civic engagement of older generations in service, learning and work.

IMRF Executive Director Louis Kosiba serves on the Leadership Team for Generations Serving Generations. Older Illinoisans can help strengthen communities across our state through community involvement, and IMRF supports this important statewide initiative.

Community Benefits

According to recent data released by the Corporation for National and Community Service, the volunteer efforts of 18.7 million older adults generated a yearly economic benefit to our nation of more than 64 billion dollars from 2008 to 2010. Volunteers contribute to the health of their communities, fill critical community needs, and provide a model for lifelong leadership.

"Communities across America are seeing the benefits from the talent and skill older Americans offer through volunteering," said Robert Velasco II, acting CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service.

"Older Americans bring a lifetime of skills and experience that can be tapped to meet community challenges," added Dr. Erwin Tan, director of Senior Corps at the Corporation for National and Community Service.

Helping Yourself When You Help Others

More than two decades of research establishes a strong relationship between volunteering and health, and we are seeing that those who volunteer have lower mortality rates, greater functional ability and lower rates of depression and disease later in life than those who do not volunteer,” said Dr. Tan.
