2011 Board Officers
The Board approved the following 2011 officers:
- President: Martha H. Rademacher
- Vice President: Marvin R. Shoop, Jr.
- Secretary: Gwen Henry
IMRF Legislative Liaison Bonnie Shadid reported on the following:
- Senate Bill 550, the trailer bill that made the technical clean-up changes to Public Act 96-0889 (the pension reform bill) passed both chambers unanimously and is waiting the governor’s signature.
- Senate Bill 3538, which creates a second tier for Chicago and downstate police and fire plans and IMRF SLEP participants, passed both chambers. The bill is effective January 1, 2011. The Governor has not indicated, however, whether he will sign the bill.
- Senate Bill 1716, which creates civil unions in the state, was passed by both chambers. The bill allows civil union partners to receive the same benefits as spouses anywhere in the Illinois statutes. For IMRF purposes, this bill will allow civil union partners to receive surviving spouse benefits in the same manner as spouses currently receive and is effective June 1, 2011. The bill applies to both same and opposite gender partners. The Governor, a major proponent of the legislation, is expected to sign the bill at a bill-signing ceremony in early January.
The House is scheduled to return to Springfield on January 3rd and be in session through the 11th to finish out the 96th General Assembly. In contrast, the Senate is scheduled to return only for January 4th through the 6th.
The 97th General Assembly will begin on Wednesday, January 12th, with the inauguration scheduled for noon on that day.
