According to America Saves.org, many households do not have adequate emergency savings for unexpected expenditures like a car repair. The purpose of America Saves Week is to encourage individuals to build wealth, not debt.

At IMRF we stress to our members that it’s never too early to begin saving for retirement. But more importantly, it is never to early to begin saving—whether your goal is saving for a car, a house, or your retirement.

The America Saves Week website (www.americasavesweek.org) offers many tools on a wide variety of savings topics you and your employees can use.

Employers can:

• Download posters, flyers and brochures that encourage saving
• Learn about activities to encourage your employees to save
• Read success stories from America Saves Week 2007

Employees can:

• Test their savings knowledge
• Learn the five strategies for saving
• Assess their savings progress
• Take action to save more effectively

You can even sign up to receive monthly e-mails from national experts on topics such as money management, investment basics, building wealth through homeownership, saving during tax time, and getting out of debt.

IMRF encourages our employers and members to take advantage America Saves Week and to start learning how they can work on building wealth--not debt.
